Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Toastmasters and our club
About Toastmasters
What is Toastmasters?
Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organization that helps people become better speakers and leaders. It has over 270,000 members in 14,200+ clubs across 149 countries. Members learn by practising in a supportive club environment.
How does Toastmasters help you improve?
You learn by doing. At every meeting, you practise speaking, listening, and giving feedback. There are no lectures or exams. You follow a structured program called Pathways that guides you step by step, from your very first speech to advanced communication and leadership skills.
What is the Pathways learning program?
Pathways is Toastmasters' official education program. It offers 6 specialized paths: Dynamic Leadership, Engaging Humor, Motivational Strategies, Persuasive Influence, Presentation Mastery, and Visionary Communication, with over 300 competencies. You choose a path that matches your goals and complete projects at your own pace.
Is Toastmasters only for professional speakers?
Not at all. Toastmasters is for everyone: students, working professionals, retirees, stay-at-home parents, and anyone who wants to communicate better. Most members join as complete beginners with no public speaking experience.
How is Toastmasters different from a public speaking course?
A course typically runs for a few weeks and ends. Toastmasters is an ongoing community where you practise regularly, receive feedback from trained evaluators, and grow at your own pace. There's no graduation. You keep learning and helping others learn too.
About Short & Sweet Toastmasters Club
What makes Short & Sweet Toastmasters Club different from other clubs?
Short & Sweet offers hybrid meetings (in-person and online via Zoom), on-demand mini meetings for extra practice anytime, personal mentoring including contest and workplace presentation coaching, and detailed speech evaluations from trained evaluators. Learn more on our Club page.
When and where does Short & Sweet meet?
We meet on the 4th Sunday of every month, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Our physical location is at Gakken Classroom Damansara Damai, Seasons Square, Unit F-030 (First Floor), Jalan PJU 10/3C, 47830 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. You can also join via Zoom. See our Visit Us page for directions.
How was Short & Sweet founded?
Short & Sweet was born during the COVID-19 pandemic on 17 October 2021. When many clubs were running two to three hour online sessions and members felt Zoom fatigue, we created a focused one-hour meeting format that keeps all the essentials (prepared speeches, table topics, and evaluations) while keeping everyone energised.
What awards has Short & Sweet received?
Short & Sweet has been recognized as a President's Distinguished Club by Toastmasters International, the highest achievement a club can earn. This award recognizes excellence in education, membership growth, and club management. See our award photos in the Photo Gallery.
What languages are used in meetings?
Our meetings are conducted in English. However, our members speak multiple languages including Malay and Chinese, and everyone is welcome regardless of their English proficiency. We're a supportive environment where you can improve your English communication skills too.
What are on-demand mini meetings?
Mini meetings are extra practice sessions that any member can request anytime online. If you have a big presentation coming up or just want more speaking practice, you don't have to wait for the next scheduled meeting. Simply request a mini meeting and practise with fellow members.
Visiting & Joining
Can I visit a meeting before joining?
Absolutely. Your first visit is completely free. Just come along on the 4th Sunday of any month. You can attend in person or join online via Zoom (contact us for the Zoom link). Get directions and contact us here.
Do I need any speaking experience to join?
Not at all. Most of our members started as complete beginners. The Toastmasters program is designed to build your skills from scratch, one step at a time. Whether you've never spoken in public or you're already experienced, we meet you where you are.
How much does it cost to join?
Visiting is free. Membership costs RM 50 per month (about USD 12.50), payable every 6 months. There's also a one-time joining fee of RM 120 (about USD 30), which is waived for current and past Toastmasters members. See full details on our Membership page.
Can I attend meetings online?
Yes. All our meetings are hybrid, so you can join in person at our venue in Damansara Damai, Petaling Jaya, or online via Zoom. The on-demand mini meetings are entirely online.
What should I wear to a meeting?
Smart casual is our dress code. There's no need to wear a suit or formal attire. Just dress comfortably and presentably.
Can I join more than one Toastmasters club?
Yes, you can be a member of multiple clubs. Some people join different clubs to get more speaking practice or to experience different meeting styles and cultures. Each membership is separate.
Meetings & Activities
What happens at a typical Toastmasters meeting?
Each meeting includes prepared speeches (5-7 minutes each), impromptu speaking practice called Table Topics (1-2 minutes), and detailed speech evaluations. Members also take turns filling roles like Timer, Grammarian, and Ah-Counter, which builds leadership skills. See our Meetings page for the full agenda.
What are Table Topics?
Table Topics is the impromptu speaking segment of a Toastmasters meeting. A Table Topics Master asks a question, and volunteers answer on the spot for 1-2 minutes. It's a fun way to practise thinking on your feet and speaking without preparation.
What is a speech evaluation?
After every prepared speech, a trained evaluator gives detailed feedback: what you did well and specific areas to improve. Evaluations are encouraging and actionable, making them the fastest way to grow as a speaker. Our club is known for the quality of its evaluations.
What meeting roles can I fill?
Beyond giving speeches, you can take on roles like Toastmaster of the Day (the meeting host), Table Topics Master, General Evaluator, Timer, Grammarian, and Ah-Counter. Each role develops different leadership and communication skills.
Does the club organise contests?
Yes. Toastmasters runs speech contests at club, area, division, and district levels. Our members regularly participate in contests like the International Speech Contest, Table Topics Contest, Humorous Speech Contest, and Evaluation Contest. Competing is optional but a great way to challenge yourself.
Do I get a mentor when I join?
Yes. Every new member at Short & Sweet is paired with an experienced mentor who provides one-on-one guidance. Your mentor helps you prepare speeches, coaches you for contests, and can even assist with workplace presentations.
Public Speaking Tips
How do I overcome the fear of public speaking?
The best way is through regular practice in a safe, supportive environment, which is exactly what Toastmasters provides. Start with short speeches, get encouraging feedback, and gradually build your confidence. Most people find their nervousness decreases significantly after just a few speeches.
How long does it take to become a confident speaker?
Everyone progresses at their own pace. Many members notice a real difference in confidence after delivering 3-5 speeches over a few months. The key is consistent practice and being open to feedback. Toastmasters' structured program ensures you keep improving.
What makes a great speech?
A great speech has a clear message, a strong opening, well-organised body, and a memorable closing. But the most important element is authenticity. Audiences connect with speakers who are genuine and passionate about their topic. Toastmasters teaches you all these skills through practice.
Can Toastmasters help me at work?
Absolutely. Members use their Toastmasters skills in job interviews, team meetings, client presentations, and leadership roles. The ability to speak clearly, listen actively, and give constructive feedback are valuable skills in any workplace.
Is public speaking only about giving speeches on stage?
Not at all. Public speaking includes any situation where you communicate to an audience: leading a meeting, pitching an idea, giving a toast at a wedding, or even having a confident conversation. The skills you build at Toastmasters apply to all these situations.
Still Have Questions?
